about the residents

Benton webb

I make functional pottery for the interaction with the object and the user. The use of line in my work is intended to carry the viewers eyes throughout the vessel. Texture and pattern are used promote exploration by creating a visual and sometimes tactile experience. The creation of pattern is very meditative for me and I want to have that pass on to the viewer through the exploration of the designs. Doing this on a functional object means that it will be used and interacted with, promoting the exploration of the object. The geometric patterning and line work are meant to contrast the rounded and bellied forms. This also allows me to point to the viewer and guide them to certain points and locations on the forms. This is how the patterning and line are used complement each other in a visually appealing way.

Together the use of line and pattern are both things that I utilize to draw in the user and have them explore and interact with the work.

KRISTEN ANGELOS

I create stoneware and porcelain pottery with both handbuilding and wheel thrown elements. I use both retractive and additive surface features, as well as manipulating the forms to create geometric and organic movement. I study and reconfigure glaze recipes to create unique glaze colors that when layered create interactions and motion.

When making my work, I consider practical functionality and user experience. My work centers around meditative interaction, like slowly sipping tea or caring for plants. I would like the users to engage with the work in a way that they feel wonder, calm, contemplation and joy; encouraged to admire the tiny details. I want users to treasure the delicate nature of the work and enjoy that each piece is one-of-a-kind and handmade.  I am inspired by and have a great fondness for tea drinking, organic textures and shapes derived from nature , antique finds, houseplants, color interaction and chemistry.

I paint, draw and hand build dark branches, wavy coil structures, flames out of shadows, shrubs and silhouettes.

The objects that I create cast shadows out of which subdued hues of rainbow emerge in the
sunlight. Air flows through the forms. The time is passing by and we are changing with it.
