The New Street Glass Studio launches its fifth anniversary celebration by MARTIN ROSOL’s ground glass sculptures recall abstract connections between the earthly world of the oceans, the extraterrestrial world of the cosmos, and what lies between. JOSH SIMPSON explores and expresses the colors, textures, and volcanic power of the universe through the creation of glass Planets, Saturns, and other provocative pieces. 5th Anniversary Events

The first of a series of “craft discovery experiences” to be offered by the Craft Center this year gets underway on Sunday, October 19, when the bus leaves the Center’s Sagamore Road facility for the new Chace Center at the Rhode Island School of Design. Fine craft enthusiasts will be treated to a guided tour of the inaugural exhibition, CHIHULY AT RISD, which features a special site-specific installation by world-renowned glass artist and founder of the RISD glass program, Dale Chihuly. Also included in the tour will be the viewing of three complementary exhibitions of work by other glass artists who were students during or after Chihuly's time at RISD. This is the second FREE studio-wide, hands-on, craft-related event for young families presented at the Craft Center. Families with children of all ages are invited to travel from studio to studio experiencing different media and creating artwork to bring home. Each child will carry a “Passport” to document their artistic travels and will be rewarded with a balloon for 3 activities completed. Sample “Craft & Carry” activities include mask making, clay animals, photograms, and metal bookmarks. There will be demonstrations, entertainment, refreshments – including a soup and ice cream bar – and a raffle to win a free class at the Craft Center! |
